Teaching Children Courage.

Teaching Children Courage.

Courage is misunderstood as the absence of fear, especially when we talk to our children about it. We tend to paint courage as a “superhero” trait. But for a child, true courage is much quieter. It is the shaky breath they take before trying something new, the decision to stand up for a friend, or the willingness to listen to their own inner voice when the world feels overwhelming.

Teaching children courage means showing them how to move forward even when they are.

Courage in the Small Moments

We often wait for “big” life events to talk about bravery, but courage is a muscle that is built in the daily “little things.” It’s found in:

  • The Courage to Fail: Letting children try a task they might not get right the first time. When we celebrate the effort instead of just the win, we teach them that “falling” isn’t the opposite of courage—giving up is.
  • The Courage to be Kind: It takes a lot of heart for a child to reach out to someone sitting alone or to say “sorry” when they’ve made a mistake. These are the foundations of moral courage.
  • The Courage to Listen: Sometimes, the bravest thing a child can do is trust their intuition. In a world full of loud opinions and expectations, listening to that “quiet whisper” inside that says you can do it is a profound act of bravery.

Modeling “Everyday” Bravery

As parents and mentors, the best way to teach courage is to model it. Share stories of your own small braveries, the times you were nervous for a meeting, or when you had to learn a difficult new skill. When children see that adults also feel “the butterflies” but keep going anyway, it demystifies bravery. It becomes something reachable rather than a far-off ideal.

A Journey into the Heart of Courage

If you are looking for a way to start this conversation with your kids, stories are often the most powerful tool we have. They allow children to “rehearse” bravery through the eyes of a character.

A wonderful resource for this is “My Unusual Friends” by Dicc Klann. It is a heartwarming journey about friendship, courage, and seeing magic in the little things we often miss. The story follows a child who discovers that being brave doesn’t always mean having all the answers—it means having the heart to listen to a gentle whisper and the curiosity to follow it into the unknown.

Reading about these “unusual” connections will enable children to learn that they are never truly alone and that wonder is always waiting for those brave enough to look for it. Keep an eye out for the release of this new book on Amazon to help your little ones start their own journey of courage.
